Vermont Forest Cemetery is proud to play host to Dirt Camp!
Welcome to Dirt Camp 2025!
Dirt Camp is a multidisciplinary, educator led, place based learning summer day camp for adolescents in Roxbury and neighboring towns. Our mission at Dirt Camp is to facilitate service ecology learning experiences while simultaneously fostering community building opportunities for local youth in the context of Vermont’s forest ecosystem. Campers can expect to design and collect data for experiments, participate in naturalistic observation, grow in their creative capacity through nature based art, and explore their empathy for all things living and nonliving.
Dirt Camp will be offering two sessions:
-
Camper Age 8-12, Week of: July 14th (M,) 16th (W,) & 18th (F)
-
Camper Age 13-17, Week of: July 21st (M,) 23rd (W,) 25th (F)
*Please note that camp only runs on the Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week!
A Day At Dirt Camp
Ecology & Art:
This year at camp we are pleased to be exploring several different ecological themes!
For our campers ages 8-12, participants can expect to learn about the foundational principles of scientific drawing and note taking, qualitative and quantitative observation recording, and integrative thinking as it relates to the ecology of our forest. We will be pursuing ongoing projects with the Vermont Flying Squirrel Network & the Vermont Atlas of Life Butterfly project, while also cultivating a basic understanding of Vermont’s forested ecosystems.

For our Campers ages 13-17, will be pursuing similar ecological themes but have the opportunity to choose from a variety of service learning projects. This project will culminate at the end of the camp by groups sharing their findings and reflections. Stay tuned to learn more!

Safety Measures & Procedures
Dirt Camp is located in a rural area of Roxbury, VT at the Vermont Forest Cemetery (VFC) which does not receive great cell service. Please note that campers will not have access to call and text while at VFC. In the event of an emergency there is satellite wifi and a ZOLEO satellite communicator with 911 compatibility. Satellite wifi will not be available to connect to for nonemergency purposes. Camp directors Bailey and Clarissa are both CPR/First Aid/Stop the Bleed certified & the nearest medical center is Gifford Hospital in Randolph (which is approx. 30 min drive.)
Dirt Camp is taking place in the forested landscape of Vermont, and in the central valley. The weather can be temperamental. We will never expose kids to unsafe weather conditions (such as thunderstorms.) In the event that a storm sets on suddenly, know that we have shelter available in the form of a small cabin. If we see ahead of time that the weather is looking bad for a scheduled day of camp, we will coordinate with one of our local community partners to move programming inside for the day (or a portion of.) Always keep an eye on your email before and during camp days!
