About the event
Thank you so much for volunteering with Vermont Forest Cemetery! Here are a couple of important things to know before arriving.
Events May Be Subject to Change: While we do our best to give as much advance notice as possible, there are times when we will need to cancel events due to an unexpected burial. We may also cancel due to inclement weather. We ask that you keep an eye on your email the morning you are scheduled to volunteer. If we do cancel an event, we will reach out again at the next opportunity! We appreciate your understanding!
Attire: Please dress appropriately for going on a hike in the woods in whatever season you are visiting. If you are unsure how to dress during any given season, feel free to reach out to us and we will give you our best recommendations. Our tours last about an hour and involve walking on trails in various levels of development and the ground can be muddy. We don’t recommend open toed shoes like flip flops or sandals.
Arrival: Please arrive on time to the volunteering events. We ask that you do not arrive earlier than 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
Restrooms: We do not currently have a restroom at the cemetery. There are bathrooms for public use at the town offices (during business hours) and at the fish hatchery (3696 Roxbury Rd/12a) as well as at the gas station at the intersection of 64 and Rt. 12 in Northfield.
Pack In/ Pack Out: We recommend that when volunteering in positions that involve physical labor (ex. ushers, pallbearers, trail clearers, etc.) that you bring water and a snack. We do not have trash cans available on site. Please make sure to pack in everything you brought out with you to prevent any litter from finding its way into the forest.
Cell Service & Coverage: The cemetery is in a remote location and cell coverage is spotty to nonexistent at best on most of the land and surrounding area. There are wifi hot-spots at the library (1491 Roxbury Rd/12a) and at the town offices (1664 Roxbury Rd/12a). You do not need to go inside to access them.
